Savvy By Design’s guide to pillows

To properly size pillows for inserts, you want to follow a simple rule: choose inserts that are 1-2 inches larger than the pillow cover. This will give the pillow a full, plush look. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

1. Pillow Insert Sizing Guide

  • Small Pillows (16x16 inches or smaller): For covers that are 16x16 inches or smaller, use an insert that is exactly 1 inch larger. So, for a 16x16 cover, choose a 17x17 inch insert.

  • Medium Pillows (18x18 to 22x22 inches): For medium-sized pillows, opt for an insert that is 2 inches larger. For example, for a 20x20 inch pillow cover, use a 22x22 inch insert.

  • Large Pillows (24x24 inches and larger): For oversized pillows, use an insert that is also 2 inches larger than the cover, so for a 24x24 inch cover, go for a 26x26 inch insert.

2. Down or Feather Inserts:

  • These types of inserts compress more, so sizing up is especially important to achieve that full, luxurious look.

3. Polyfill Inserts:

  • Polyfill tends to be firmer and doesn’t compress as much as down, so sizing up is less critical. However, using a larger insert will still ensure your pillow looks more full.

4. Special Shapes:

  • Lumbar Pillows: For lumbar pillows, it’s a good idea to stick to the same rule—choose an insert that is 1-2 inches longer than the cover length. For instance, a 14x24 inch lumbar pillow cover should have a 15x25 or 16x26 inch insert.
